聚碳酸酯(簡稱PC)是分子鏈中含有碳酸酯基的高分子聚合物，根據酯基的結構可分為脂肪族、芳香族、脂肪族-芳香族等多種類型。其中由于脂肪族和脂肪族-芳香族聚碳酸酯的機械性能較低，從而限制了其在工程塑料方面的應用。目前僅有芳香族聚碳酸酯獲得了工業化生產。由于聚碳酸酯結構上的特殊性，現已成為五大工程塑料中增長速度快的通用工程塑料。

化學性能

聚碳酸酯（PC）是碳酸的聚酯類，碳酸本身并不穩定，但其衍生物（如光 氣，尿素，碳酸鹽，碳酸酯）都有一定穩定性。按醇結構的不同，可將聚碳酸酯分成脂族和芳族兩類。

脂族聚碳酸酯。如聚亞乙基碳酸酯，聚三亞甲基碳酸酯及其共聚物，熔點和玻璃化溫度低，強度差，不能用作結構材料；但利用其生物相容性和生物可降解的特性，可在緩釋放載體，手術縫合線，骨骼支撐材料等方面獲得應用。

聚碳酸酯耐弱酸，耐弱堿，耐中性油。

聚碳酸酯不耐紫外光，不耐強堿。

PC是一種線型碳酸聚酯，分子中碳酸基團與另一些基團交替排列，這些基團可以是芳香族，可以是脂肪族，也可兩者皆有。雙酚A型PC是重要的工業產品。

主要性能

a、機械性能：強度高、耐疲勞性、尺寸穩定、蠕變也小（高溫條件下也極少有變化）；

b、耐熱老化性：增強后的UL溫度指數達120~140℃（戶外長期老化性也很好）；

c、耐溶劑性：無應力開裂；

d、對水穩定性：高溫下遇水易分解（高溫高濕環境下使用需謹慎）；

e、電氣性能：

1、絕緣性能：優良（潮濕、高溫也能保持電,是制造電子、電氣零件的理想材料）；

2、介電系數：3.0-3.2；

3、耐電弧性：120s；

f、成型加工性：普通設備注塑或擠塑。

安全性爭議

由于制造聚碳酸酯中需要添加雙酚A，而雙酚A作為一種化工原料，2008年4月18日已經被加拿大聯邦政府正式認定為有毒物質，并嚴禁在食品包裝中添加，所以，聚碳酸酯的安全性是值得注意的問題。歐盟認為含雙酚A奶瓶會誘發，從2011年3月2日起，禁止含生產化學物質雙酚A(BPA）的*奶瓶。中國衛生部等部門發布公告稱，2011年9月1日起禁止進口和銷售聚碳酸酯嬰 幼 兒奶瓶和其他含雙酚A的嬰幼兒奶瓶，由生產企業或進口商負責召回。
